The MCEDC also presented its annual Hinton Mitchem Economic Development Award of Excellence to former state representative Frank McDaniel. For over 40 years, Frank McDaniel has served the people of Marshall County in various roles as a business owner, community leader and elected state legislator. During his five terms in the legislature, Frank spent much of his efforts championing economic development projects.
He established and served as Chairman of the Joint House & Senate State Parks Oversight Committee, which was responsible for a comprehensive renovation plan of the park system including the Lake Guntersville State Park. As chairman of the Joint Transportation Committee, he was able to push efforts for highway projects in the region including expansion of Highways 75, 69 and 431. A long-time advocate for municipal airports, Frank helped secure funding for several expansions at the Albertville Regional Airport and was largely responsible for the establishment of the Albertville Aviation Training Center there.
As early as the late 1980’s, Frank saw the need for a unified, countywide economic development effort for Marshall County. He helped establish and secure funding for the MCEDC that was incorporated in 1994. Since retiring from the legislature in 2010, he continues to serve on numerous boards and still promotes economic development in Marshall County.
The Hinton Mitchem Economic Development Award of Excellence was first established in 2012 as the Marshall Industrialist Award. Davis Lee was the first recipient. Following the passing of former state senator Hinton Mitchem in January 2013, the award was renamed in his honor. Subsequent recipients have been: Gordon Henderson (posthumously), Ray Bice, Buck Buchanan, George Kappler and Charlie Hare. The MCEDC hosts the Industry Appreciation Dinner annually to show the community’s thanks to the companies and individuals that provide jobs and economic development to the people of Marshall County.
